Library blogs versus librarian blogs…which one and would you incorporate blogging into your professional career?

Can I answer both? (I think I can because I’m blogging and can say exactly what I choose!) I think that each one can offer important contributions. As discussed by Alice Yucht in “Mattering in the School Blogoshpere,” library blogs are used for the more “practical and local info and school librarian blogs, which are often more philosophical discussions about information literacy and cirriculum issues, educational policies and procedures, technology and collection management concerns…”

To me, both carry equal importance. It is just as imporatant to have deeper, more conceptual and innovative conversations and rantings as it is to discuss the more logistical aspects to librarianship. Each have their own audience and purpose.

Issues/positive consequences for using blogs in schools…

I think that blogging could be an extremely useful tool for students and educators alike. I think blogging gives everyone the opportunity to communicate and exchange ideas while also helping with basic writing skills. Several examples were given in the readings about successful blogging in the school environment. I loved the article “diary of a blog: listening to kids in an elementary school library.” Getting kids involved and excited about learning and sharing information with each other and through new technology is wonderful. Blogging seems like it is just the tool to do the trick!

Mary Ann Bell, in her article “Celebrating Communicating: Blogging Redux,” does talk about a challenge of using blogs in schools. “Unfortunately it is impossible to talk about blogging as it relates to schools without mentioning the challenge of filtering.” She goes on to say “our challenge is to promote greater understanding of the value of social communication, and a great place to start is with blogging since this tool has been around for quite awhile and seems to be one that is gradually gaining acceptance today.”
